4 January 2010

Southwark residents have seen a scattering of gongs this year, as the Queen's New Year's honours were announced, writes Oliver Pugh...

Former Star Trek actor and Riverside ward resident Patrick Stewart will be knighted, along with the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Mark Jones, from SE1.

Other honours for residents include a CBE for Professor Janet Darbyshire, from SE1, for her services to clinical science at the Medical Research Council and an MBE for a local magazine editor.

Ten years after starting, Precious Online, Borough resident Foluke Akinlose will get the timely award for her services to the creative industry.

Foluke told the 'News': "When they called to say I just laughed. I don't think I'll believe it until I see it on paper.”
It was also revealed that East Dulwich resident, Dr Jane Overbury, principal of the Christ the King Sixth Form College, in Lewisham, will get an OBE for services to Education.

Nigel Kershaw, the chairman of The Big Issue, from SE1, will get an OBE for his services to social enterprise.
And for his services to the hospitality industry, Iqbal Wahhab, also from SE1, the chairman of the Ethnic Minority Advisory Group to the government, will also be awarded an OBE.

Maureen Kavanagh, from SE16, will also be given an MBE for her work at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
